2017 update:
Worse than the worst: in 2017 the St Joseph @ Jeanne d'Arc #Roundabout once again experienced MORE collisions (n=54) than the "most dangerous intersection (with lights) in City of Ottawa" (n=45). The St Joseph @ Trim Roundabout was not far behind (n=40).
70% (117/166) of roundabout collisions across the city occurred in #InnesWard#OrléansWard and #CumberlandWard

St Joseph@Jeanne d’Arc numbers:
  • Almost HALF (48%, n=173) of all roundabout collisions IN THE CITY (2014-2016) happened at this roundabout.
  • 2x times as many collisions during the afternoon commute (14h-18h) than the morning commute (6h-930h)
    • 42% (n=72) in the afternoon vs 18% (n=32) in the morning
  • Almost all collisions (87%, n=151) happened in Clear environmental conditions
  • Sideswipe/angle collisions were the most common (88%, n=152)
  • 7 collisions (4%) reported non-fatal injuries, 0 fatal injuries
    • But 25% of all non-fatal injuries at roundabouts in the city (N=28) occurred at this roundabout!
  • 1 collision involving a pedestrian was reported, 0 involving cyclists

TAKE HOME MESSAGES:

  • There’s an average of 1 collision per week at the St Joseph@Jeanne d’Arc roundabout
  • Slow down when going in/through the roundabout, especially during the afternoon commute (2pm - 6pm)
  • Watch for pedestrians: they do not have the right-of-way in this roundabout, but many may think they do
  • Drive defensively: Be alert to vehicles beside you as they enter/exit the circle
